Interview w Coni Kemp from Neuro-Wave: Unlocking Brain Health in Puyallup: Neuro-Wave’s Expert Neurofeedback Therapy

Stepping out into a division of downtown Puyallup office buildings, I pause to admire the view. Across the parking lot, overlooking the railroad tracks and a field, stands the majestic Mount Rainier. It’s a clear, sunny November day, a rare treat.

Today, I’m at Neuro-Wave/Touchpoint Counseling to chat with Coni Kemp, their lead technician and my long-time friend. I skip the elevator and opt for the stairs, reaching their top-floor office one flight up. The entrance welcomes me with a serene, clean waiting room, complete with a coffee station and a sound machine.

In a private, dimly lit room, Coni and I settled on a leather couch. “I’ve known you so long, Coni, but still have no idea what you do?” Here’s what I learned.

Neuro-Wave, a prominent mental health care center with locations in Puyallup and Gig Harbor, specializes in neurofeedback therapy. They excel in brain health, offering unique solutions for ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. Neurofeedback therapy at Neuro-Wave empowers patients, allowing them to actively participate in their healing. This method is innovative not only in technology but also in its holistic approach. It involves monitoring and altering brain activity to address various psychological conditions, providing real-time feedback on brainwaves.

Some treatments at Neuro-Wave may include:

Electroencephalogram (EEG) Equipment: The cornerstone of neurofeedback therapy, EEG machines record the brain’s electrical activity using sensors attached to the scalp. These signals are amplified and analyzed, providing real-time feedback on brainwave patterns.

Computer Software: Specialized software processes EEG data, converting brainwave patterns into a format suitable for therapy. It includes various protocols designed for different therapeutic goals.

Visual and Auditory Feedback Systems: Patients receive feedback through engaging formats like video games, moving graphics, or sounds. This interactive approach helps patients actively modify their brain activity.

Quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG): qEEG maps brainwave activity, offering a comprehensive view of brain function. It helps identify irregular brain areas for targeted therapy.

Red Light Therapy Equipment: An adjunct to neurofeedback, red light therapy uses low-wavelength light to potentially influence brain health. It may enhance cognitive function and reduce inflammation.

Jackie Smith, Neuro-Wave’s founder, is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience. Her expertise includes treating chronic illness, chronic pain, trauma, ADHD, and TBI from car accidents. Her dedication to neuropsychological methods like qEEG brain mapping underscores her commitment to neuroplasticity.

Neuro-Wave’s engagement with the Puyallup and Gig Harbor communities is noteworthy. They participate in local events and initiatives, emphasizing their commitment to community health services. From mental health seminars to collaborations with health providers, Neuro-Wave is a community pillar.

Interview w David Pozolinski: CEO of A Step Ahead Pierce Couty

They say it takes a village. I can tell you that it definitely takes a community. In the middle of a global pandemic, when the streets seemed quiet, the world was locked away and resources were scarce, my family found a sense of hope. Our journey with A Step Ahead Pierce County (ASAPC) has been nothing short of transformative, a path of discovery, growth, and unwavering support.

As a parent, watching your child struggle with developmental delays and sensory issues is heart-wrenching. My daughter, Chandler, was just one when these challenges became clear. Amidst the pandemic chaos, the path to answers was on long. Referrals had a 6-12 month (sometimes longer) wait time and each place where we seeked support had limited staffing. In my relentless search for solutions, I stumbled upon ASAPC - a program dedicated to early support for infants and toddlers (ESIT) from birth to three. This discovery was the sign of moving forward in a time when everything stood still.

Chandler’s acceptance into ASAPC marked the beginning of an incredible journey. The virtual therapy sessions, a necessity in the pandemic, were a blend of challenges and victories. Through each session, laughter and tears became our language of healing and understanding. ASAPC not only offered us professional guidance but also taught me how to be the pillar my daughter needed to overcome her hurdles.

Life has a way of presenting unique challenges. When my son, Oliver, was born prematurely in November 2020, we soon noticed developmental concerns distinct from Chandler’s. Relying on my newly learned experience with Chandler, I approached these challenges with a better understanding but the same level of concern. With ASAPC’s support, Oliver, too, began his growth.

ASAPC has been more than a program for us; it’s been a lifeline. It provided not just support for Chandler and Oliver, but also a sense of community and belonging. As a parent, watching both your children diagnosed with autism is a complex emotional journey. ASAPC stood with us at every turn, offering guidance, empathy, and invaluable resources. The friendships and bonds formed here have evolved into a second family, one that we cherish deeply.

Celebrating Oliver’s progress as he aged out of the program and onto preschool (which was facilitated by ASAPC) was bittersweet. The cupcakes and pizza were not just a celebration of milestones but a testament to the journey we had all embarked on together. Our goodbye was not an end, but a promise to stay connected, to support, and to celebrate each step ahead.

To any parent facing similar challenges, know that you are not alone. Organizations like A Step Ahead Pierce County can offer invaluable support and resources. I encourage you to reach out, to seek help, and to embrace the community around you. Our journey is a testament to the incredible impact early intervention and dedicated support can have on our children’s lives.
